Guy Unsworth

Writer & Director

Guy Unsworth is an internationally acclaimed director and writer, celebrated for his work across a wide range of genres, including new musicals, Shakespeare and film.

Born and raised in Merseyside, Guy trained in theatre directing at the Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts. He began his career as an assistant director for productions in the West End and at the Royal Shakespeare Company, eventually establishing himself as an international director and writer.

As a writer, Guy is known for adapting existing works for contemporary audiences. His 2018 reimagining of Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em received widespread acclaim during its three UK tours. The Stage noted, “It achieves something remarkable. It stays true to the original while delivering a fresh farce that’s entirely its own.” In 2024, he wrote and directed Joyride: The Roxette Musical for Malmö Opera, based on Jane Fallon’s novel Got You Back - a jukebox sensation set to tour Sweden and Europe. Expressen hailed it as a “masterpiece... funny, really funny, not a joke goes wrong."

In addition to his extensive work in the UK, Guy’s productions as a director have taken him around the world, including Being Mr. Wickham in New York, Miss Saigon in Oslo, My Fair Lady in Barcelona and three critically acclaimed shows for Singapore’s Shakespeare in the Park. In 2016, he was also part of the creative team behind the Queen’s 90th Birthday Celebrations.

His theatre-film The System earned nominations for Best Director and Best Feature Film at the Sensei Tokyo Film Festival, with The Upcoming praising it for “revolutionising the industry through its hybrid storytelling.”
